The author used a multi-case study approach to a family literacy program that attempts to teach adult English language learners (ELL) the knowledge and skills to allow them to support their children's learning at home. Methodology used to gather information from the 14 adult participants included interviews, field observations, and lesson plan analysis. Data analysis shows that (1) parental education level correlates with successful support of children’s learning, as does participants' ability to guide children through the educational system; (2) the curriculum supported the learning; (3) regardless of other factors, participants based ability to support their child's learning on their own ability to master English. |
